Middle East

The era of human rights in the Middle East
Middle East is the name of a region that encompasses Western Asia and North Africa. This part of the world has always been a zone of conflicts. Recently, since December 2010 we have been witnesses of what is called the “Arab Spring”. It started in Tunisia with the “Jasmin revolution” and the protests quickly conquered the Arab world. Egypt, Algeria, Morocco, Bahrain, Djibouti, Libya… and many other Arabians countries. The issue is that the government in these countries are not respecting  the human rights. Most of the time rulers are acting like dictators. The people, tired of approving this way of life decided to protest and to claim for their rights. The protests were peaceful; they used ordinary techniques like strikes, demonstrations, marches and also social media such as facebook and twitter. Depending of the states,  government reaction were more or less peaceful. Many civilians were killed in Tunisia, Egypt and Libya. It was more peaceful in Algeria, Lebanon, and Iran. In some countries it leads to major political changes, most of the time the ouster of the head of state. In other it is more difficult, in Libya for example the United tried to calm the situation.  They adopted a measure requiring an immediate ceasefire over Libya and the establishment of a no fly zone over the country. It has not been respected by the Libyan government and it leads to military intervention from France, Uk, Canada and USA.  Today is the 6th day of international military intervention in Libya and peace is not back yet. How long is this fight for human right is going to last and in the benefit of how many life? It is also important to say that occidental countries have an interesting position in these conflicts. They want to stop the slaughters but they also have another interest which is petrol.

   Government overthrown
   Significant government change
   Armed rebellion
   Major protests
   Minor protests
