Everyone knows that the St. Pete campus of USF wants to be its own entity. It is shown simply by the emphasis put on "USFSP," they want everyone to know that it is the "St. Pete" campus. Who can blame them though, a school can achieve a great reputation by building its own standings; and reputation means more students and prestige. One thing that holds back the campus from rising to fame is the housing situation. There are still a few people living in the Hilton, which does not help a schools reputation. Its a fact that the majority of students living in the dorms are freshman, that is because a good portion move out with the first chance they get. You have to credit the school for working on solving the issue (the new housing building that is under construction) but they still need to spend a little more time on the issue. They need to get a little creative in the solution, maybe offering a discount to students who stay for consecutive years, helping to keep more people on campus and help the overall atmosphere of the dorms.
The second part of this argument is the available food services on campus. I hate to complain but Chik-Fil-A is really a monopoly on campus. One thing that really helps customers get the best possible product is competition, and there really isn't any in this case. Bigger campuses have more food options, even food plans for people living in the dorms, USF doesn't have even have the latter. I think if they are preparing to house more students, then they need to take into account how to feed all these students. That Chik-Fil-A will get pretty packed if the school houses double the amount of people it houses now. Though it would help you get fresher food, it negates the whole point of "fast-food." I think the incorporation of other food providers on campus would help feed the hunger of more students more effectively. In addition, the competition would help keep the quality of the food in check, as well as possibly helping to keep the prices down. This as a whole would help make the St. Pete campus better suited for students to stay on the campus, and ultimately help the campus become its own system. It would become more affiliated with the Tampa campus than dependent on it.
